Dispensaries face a signage problem most businesses don't. You need to be easy to find, but cannabis advertising and signage rules are stricter than for almost any other kind of shop. The good news: a well-planned sign can do both. This guide covers where neon fits, what to check before you order, and design ideas that tend to stay on the right side of the rules.
This is general information, not legal advice. Cannabis signage rules differ by state, county and city, and they change. Always confirm with your state regulator, your local licensing office and your landlord before ordering.
Start with the rules, then design
Before picking fonts or colors, get answers to these questions for your location:
- What does your state allow on exterior signs? Many states limit imagery, wording, the number of signs or how signs can be seen from outside.
- Are cannabis leaves, products or consumption images allowed? In many places, exterior signs cannot show them.
- What does your city or county sign code say? Local codes usually control size, placement, lighting, animation and whether you need a sign permit.
- Are there rules about signs near schools, parks or youth facilities?
- Does your landlord or property manager have sign rules? Shopping centers often have their own standards.
- What signs are required inside? Age restrictions and other notices are often mandatory, and the exact wording can be set by regulation.
Get the answers in writing where you can. It is much cheaper to design around a rule than to replace a finished sign.
Exterior signs: be findable, keep it simple
- Lead with your business name. A clean name sign is the safest and most useful exterior sign for most dispensaries.
- Skip the leaf if in doubt. Use your logo shape, a color palette or a simple icon that isn't a plant or product instead.
- Use static lighting. Flashing or animated exterior signs are restricted in many sign codes. A dimmable, steady glow is a safer choice.
- Make hours and "Open" easy to see. An open sign in the window helps customers and usually raises fewer questions than product imagery.
- Tell us if the sign goes outdoors. Exterior locations need an outdoor-rated build.
Interior signs: where you can show personality
Inside the store, you usually have more freedom, though some states still regulate displays that can be seen from outside. Interior ideas that work well:
- Your logo or name behind the counter or check-in area
- Wayfinding signs: check-in, pickup, express, ATM, restrooms
- A short brand phrase on a feature wall that customers want to photograph
- Menu board frames or accent lighting around displays
- Required notices in a clean, readable style that matches your brand
Design tips for dispensary neon
- Match your brand, not the stereotype. Many modern dispensaries use warm white, soft green or their own brand colors for a boutique feel.
- Keep wording clean. Avoid slang or jokes that could read as promoting consumption, especially on anything visible from the street.
- Plan the view from the sidewalk. Check what can be seen through the windows at night when the interior is lit.
- Size for distance. A common rule of thumb is about one inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance.
- Look at a mockup first. A mockup lets you and your compliance contact review the design before anything is built.
